Mobile Light Tower Buyer Guide

Solar vs Diesel vs Hybrid Mobile Light Towers: How to Choose

Choosing a mobile light tower is not simply a comparison of lamp wattage. The right power system depends on the lighting task, runtime, fuel access, solar conditions, noise limits, movement frequency and the consequences of downtime. This guide compares diesel, solar and hybrid mobile light towers so project teams can shortlist a practical configuration before requesting a quotation.

Start with the duty cycle

There is no universal “best” mobile light tower

A diesel tower may be the practical choice for long, high-output night shifts with established refuelling. A solar tower can reduce noise and routine fuel handling where daily energy demand matches the available solar resource. A hybrid tower can combine battery operation with solar charging and generator backup when the operating pattern changes or reliability is critical.

Before selecting a model, define the illuminated area, required light level, hours per night, seasonal weather, site access and how frequently the tower will be moved. These conditions have a greater effect on the result than a single headline specification.

Commercial questionIs the lower initial complexity worth the fuel and service plan? Can the solar and battery system reliably cover the duty cycle?Does reduced generator runtime justify the additional system complexity?

Use the same planned ownership period, annual lighting hours and work-area requirements when comparing costs. Request component-specific warranty terms and replacement assumptions. See the light tower ownership-cost checklist for battery replacement, service labour and freight items to include in a quotation.

The comparison describes general selection logic. Final performance depends on the specified components, site conditions and operating profile.

Check the limiting condition before shortlisting a power system

Project conditionStarting optionWhat must be verified
Long lighting shifts with regular fuel deliveriesDieselLighting and auxiliary load, measured fuel use, service access and refuelling intervals. Tank size alone does not establish runtime.
Quiet overnight operation with daytime solar accessSolar and batteryNightly energy demand, usable battery energy, shading and seasonal solar replenishment. Panel nameplate power is not daily energy production.
Several low-sun days with lighting that cannot be interruptedHybrid, subject to backup planningBattery reserve, backup start conditions, charging capability and fuel access. Confirm the proposed control settings rather than assuming automatic operation meets every duty cycle.
A required period without engine operationBattery-capable solar or hybrid systemUsable energy at the actual lighting load and the permitted charging window. Agree how low battery charge is handled during the quiet period.
Grid power or an external generator is availableReview the proposed electrical interface before choosingSupply voltage, frequency, phase, connection and available charging hours. Ask whether the quoted package supports external charging or direct lighting operation; do not assume these functions are included.
Tools, cameras or communications equipment share the power supplySize the complete load and confirm permitted outputsList each device, operating hours, simultaneous use and starting load. Request available auxiliary output with all lamps on, including outlet and protection limits.
Frequent relocation between work areasCompare the chassis and mast separately from the energy sourceStowed dimensions, stated weight basis, lifting method, deployment space and destination towing requirements.

Lighting hours and engine-running hours are different measures. Nominal battery storage is not fully usable energy. Request the proposed configuration and operating assumptions before accepting a runtime or operating-cost estimate.

Compare actual configurations in the diesel light tower range and solar and battery model comparison. For a diesel quotation, use the configuration and procurement checklist.

01

When diesel is the practical choice

Diesel mobile light towers are commonly considered for construction, roadworks, mining and emergency projects that require dependable lighting through long shifts. They are especially practical where crews already manage diesel equipment and refuelling logistics.

Compare fuel tank capacity, expected load, engine and generator combination, mast operation, transport dimensions, wind limitations and service access. For manual winch lifting, review the D951 manual-winch diesel tower. For 7.5 m electric lifting, compare the D953 electric-mast diesel tower. For project-specific configurations, see the D955 diesel mobile light tower.

02

When solar can reduce routine site work

Solar mobile light towers are useful where low noise, reduced routine fuel handling and unattended operation are priorities. Security sites, remote compounds, parking areas and lower-energy lighting duties may be suitable applications.

For a complete solar lighting configuration, review the S971 solar light tower. Selection must be based on energy balance rather than panel size alone. Review nightly load, battery usable capacity, expected solar generation, seasonal weather, autonomy requirement, shading and the consequence of several low-sun days. A correctly sized system may reduce site visits, while an undersized system creates avoidable downtime.

03

When hybrid provides useful flexibility

Hybrid mobile light towers combine more than one energy source. They can support quiet battery operation during selected hours while retaining generator backup for longer shifts or difficult weather.

The value of a hybrid system depends on control strategy and duty cycle. Ask how charging sources are prioritised, when the generator starts, how battery reserve is protected and what happens after several days of limited solar input.

Solar light tower battery sizing

How Much Battery Capacity Does a Lighting Shift Need?

Start with the actual electrical input of all lamps and other equipment, then state how long each load runs. The example below uses a hypothetical 600 W constant load, 88% conversion efficiency, 80% usable depth of discharge and an additional 20% capacity allowance. These are calculation assumptions, not S971 or S975 specifications.

Illustrative nominal battery capacity (kWh) = load (kW) × hours ÷ conversion efficiency ÷ usable depth of discharge × 1.20.

Lighting scheduleEnergy at the loadIllustrative nominal battery capacity
600 W for 10 hours6.0 kWhAbout 10.2 kWh
600 W for 12 hours7.2 kWhAbout 12.3 kWh

Use the conversion path of the proposed system: do not apply an inverter loss to a system without that inverter or count the same loss twice. Confirm controller and auxiliary loads, battery temperature limits, ageing allowance and the reserve required between charging opportunities. Solar replenishment must be reviewed separately for the location, season and shading; battery capacity alone does not establish repeated nightly runtime.

For a model quotation, compare the S971 solar light tower and S975 solar light tower, then provide the lighting schedule and required low-sun reserve. Ask for the battery voltage, series/parallel arrangement, nominal energy and usable energy of the quoted configuration.

S977 solar-diesel hybrid mobile light tower

The S977 solar-diesel hybrid mobile light tower combines solar charging, LiFePO4 battery storage and diesel backup. It is designed for projects that need quiet battery operation but cannot accept the risk of relying on solar input alone.

Confirm the proposed charging sources, backup start and stop settings, actual load, operating schedule, destination climate and transport requirements. This makes the S977 relevant to construction, mining, rental and remote infrastructure projects where energy conditions vary across the working period.

Buyer checklist

Start with four details; refine the configuration together

Quantity, destination, application and hours per night are enough to start a project discussion. The checklist below helps refine the quotation when those details are available.

Lighting taskArea, target illumination, lamp quantity and mast placement
Operating scheduleHours per night, days per week and seasonal changes
Energy accessFuel access, grid voltage and frequency, charging windows, solar conditions and additional electrical loads
EnvironmentAltitude, minimum starting temperature, operating temperatures, dust, wind, corrosion and noise restrictions
MobilityTowing method, road access, setup frequency and transport limits
Commercial planQuantity, destination, delivery schedule and customization needs

Providing these details allows suppliers to compare realistic configurations instead of quoting a generic tower that may not match the job.

Frequently asked questions

Mobile light tower power selection

Is a solar light tower always cheaper to operate?

Not automatically. Solar can reduce routine fuel use and engine servicing, but the battery and solar system must be correctly sized for the duty cycle. Compare total ownership cost, expected utilisation and downtime risk.

When is a hybrid light tower better than a diesel tower?

Hybrid is worth evaluating when quiet operation, reduced generator runtime or multiple charging sources have measurable value. Diesel may remain simpler for continuous high-load operation with reliable refuelling.

How many hours can a hybrid mobile light tower run?

Review lighting hours, usable battery energy, charging opportunities and backup needs together. Solar performance depends on replenishing stored energy. For hybrid systems, distinguish lighting hours from engine-running hours and confirm the charging and backup settings. Fuel use and runtime require validation for the proposed configuration.

What should be customized for a project?

Depending on feasibility, customization may include lamps, mast, lifting method, battery, solar array, fuel tank, engine, voltage, controls, trailer and environmental protection.
